Hi! I’m Zach,
A neuroscience major, pre-med student, and an outright junkie of all things cognition
As I venture into the world of neuroscience in my pursuit of eventual physician-hood, I wanted to document my experiences not only as a way to share with others who may be interested in or already headed down the same path, but I also wanted to stay connected to my philosophical roots of why I want to spend my life exploring the human brain. Consciousness and cognition have fascinated me from an incredibly young age, and I tirelessly engaged with any activity which brought me closer to a sense of understanding of my mind and the minds of the others around me.

However, I do not see this as a unique trait. I believe we are hard-wired as human beings to direct the light of our curiosity inward, and in this pursuit we also shine our focus externally in order to share personal insights with others and use these interactions to further fuel our introspection. This pattern of resonating self-reflection has fueled cultural evolution for the entirety of our species through religion and philosophy, and the utmost form of this in our society today is science. As such, any modern inquiry into the mystery of our mind must start here with the scientific analysis of our cognition: Neuroscience.

This blog will look to examine and stimulate the bridging of human cultural wisdom from across our species to the current-day scientific breakthroughs in brain and intelligence processing. As an added aspect, I will also give details regarding my current summer research with the Kawata research team at Indiana University where we are exploring the effects of subconcussive head impacts on high school football players. These varying inputs should allow the blog to serve both of its intended goals: to remain grounded with the process of pursuing a career in the brain sciences, while also maintaining a thread of awareness to the overarching purpose of that research which is to propagate an internal journey of self-discovery.
